If you are looking for an attorney specializing in family law, you are probably going through a divorce and need someone who can protect you and your children. The following five options should help you along.

Ask your friends and family if they know an attorney they consider trustworthy and good. The right attorney might very well be around the corner and connected to someone you know. It is also likely that someone else you know could have gone down the same path before, and they can probably offer some good tips from their own experience. Check with the Bar Association. Calling them is a great idea, since they have a list of all their members that practice family law. Once you receive the list, you can call the attorneys and ask them several questions to see if they fit your case and your budget. Typically, your first visit is free so that you can learn what the family law attorney will do for you, their fee structure, and much more.

Check with your Legal Aid Society. You should be able to locate a Legal Aid Society in your state. If you are unable to pay the normal fees attorneys charge, you might be able to get help from your local chapter. Some attorneys will even work pro-bono, meaning for free. Some other attorneys will instead charge you on a sliding scale, and will base the fees also on your ability to repay. If you can't afford a regular attorney, this might be a great option.

Research. You should be able to find information about legal professionals in your area either from your library, or directly from the internet, where in fact that information is probably more updated than what you can find at the library. You can browse forums, ads, lists and read articles such as this one, to make sure you find the right attorney.

Check the listings on the phone directory. Most attorneys list their services on the old-fashioned phone book. If you just flip through the yellow pages you can find many attorneys and their contact information.

Going through a divorce is a painful enough process as it is. Everyone involved, including the kids, is going to need time to adjust, but things are going to be much easier if you can find an attorney that can listen and help.
