Phonics for preschoolers gives young children a chance to build good reading skills at an early age. Educators are proving that this age group can learn just about anything if it is done in a fun and entertaining way. Young children are curious about everything and they are eager to learn.

Maria Montessori was one of the first proponents of early childhood learning. She recognized that children are sensitive for learning letters and sounds at a much earlier age than when they start school. By the time they start school, this prime learning time is almost over.

Now parents or caregivers can use this information to establish a good foundation in reading for even very young kids. Always try to make it a positive experience where the child feels loved and encouraged. It is actually a wonderful bonding time for both adults and kids. When there is no testing or pressure, children will enjoy developing their intellectual curiosity.

Kids especially enjoy songs and rhymes. Take advantage of this by teaching them the alphabet song as well as simple nursery rhymes. This is helpful for teaching kids to recognize alphabet sounds and associate corresponding letter shapes.

It is also important to read simple storybooks with young kids. The Dr. Seuss series, with its funny rhymes, is especially good. Having books read aloud to them helps kids associate letter sounds and alphabet shapes.

Take advantage of little moments throughout the day to teach kids the I Spy game with letters. This helps them understand that letter sounds are connected to words. Play this game while waiting in the car or walking around the garden. Keep it fun and entertaining.

Kids can easily learn the alphabet if you start by introducing just one letter a week. Make up a name for each letter and a story about them, such as Daisy Duck for the letter D. Be sure to teach the alphabet sound as well as the letter name. Take advantage of cardboard alphabet flashcards with large colorful pictures that are easily available in bookstores or online.

Educational software is available online that makes learning fun and entertaining. There are many websites that offer games and interactive storybooks for free. Children can learn about letters and sounds at their own pace. The lively games and animated characters easily keep their attention. While playing games, they will actually be able to develop a reading foundation.

Many well written handbooks are also available. These provide simple steps to follow. Some come with an integrated reading series. Book packs with DVDs that have a more interactive approach can also be found.

Phonics for preschoolers is a fast developing field which is making numerous educational resources available for young kids. Educators and parents are starting to realize the unlimited learning potential of this age group. Young children can learn just about anything if it is presented in a fun and lively way.
