Many ask what an Optional Practical Training (OPT) is. Well, it's a momentary work permit that gives F-1 visa students the opportunity to acquire the right training in various fields where their studies are concerned. There is no way that work undergone must deviate from what the individual studied in the past or recently.
For instance; there is no way a student that has a degree in business administration will be allowed to work as a nurse as this does not preserve the rules of the OPT. When an individual is given approval of OPT, this does not necessarily mean that the student can work in the United States of America permanently.
The granting of an OPT is granted provided one has the support of a company or manager that is willing and ready to support him or her on their H-1B visa. This support leads to the possibility of citizenship in the United States of America. The OPT should never be considered to be a Visa on its own.
It is not a requirement or necessity that a student must have jobs lined up before they can be granted the OPT. The student immediately begins to look for employment after their OPT has been granted. One can apply for employment in any company, as long as what they will be employed in will be what they have studied or are currently studying. As exciting as the opportunity sounds, the drawback is that an extension of the OPT will not be granted after 12 months. The reason behind this is that the OPT is a 12month program.
All of the above opportunities do not cancel the chances of the individual as long as the student is working in line with what he or she studied. After you have been given approval for the OPT, there is no way you can get an extension after 12 months. The reason for that is the OPT is a designed 12 month program, and even if the student is unable to get the right job or any job at all, it will not be extended.
Where this system is concerned, every single day counts no matter what. If you were able to work for a total of 5 months throughout the 12 months, that is not the USCIS's problem. All that the USCIS know is that your OPT ends after 12 months. After the OPT has been approved, you need to work for 90 days, or your OPT will be considered to be not in status.

You will not be approved for another OPT for years to come even if you study another course and obtain another degree.
