We get bombarded with information about dental hygiene from adverts every day, but all of those facts can kind of wash over you after a while. The main causes of discomfort in your mouth haven't altered, and for most problems the treatments and prevention remain the same too. Here are things you should watch out for - in case you're not familiar with them already.

It might surprise you to know that tooth decay is classed as a disease, and that it's actually one of the most prevalent diseases in the world. This has a simple system of causes. Plaque, which builds up on teeth naturally, is a form of colonising bacteria. That means it's made up for lots of micro organisms that are looking for a home. Teeth are perfect for this, as unlike all the other parts of the body, they don't have a system of shedding layers over time - once the bacteria is established it doesn't have to move house. Anyway, this layer of living things combines with sugars and starches from your food and forms acid, which damages tooth enamel. This can lead to teeth being eaten away, but you can prevent it easily by brushing and flossing.

Plaque is also the culprit for another common complaint: gum disease. Here, you can prevent things with flossing as well as brushing your teeth daily. You gums are sensitive to tartar, which is a hardened form of plaque, and produces lots of acid. This irritates your gums, which is known as gingivitis, and can also bore holes in your gums to affect teeth at the root, which is called periodontitis. Neither of these are especially pleasant complaints. It is worth pointing out that plaque may actually stop more harmful bacteria from getting into the body, even if it does seem like the bad guy in all of this. On the other hand, in may contribute to heart disease as well.

Finally, an embarrassing problem that actually the most common of all dental woes is bad breath, also called halitosis. This is usually put down to forms of bacteria that build up on the layers of your tongue, and can be prevented by scraping your tongue regularly.

There are lots of other conditions that relate to the mouth, but these are by far the most common.
