The human body depends on the thyroid to regulate its metabolism. This important gland, which is located below the larynx, produces several hormones that are essential to the body's function. When it is not working the way it should, it can cause health problems. A person suffering from this disorder would likely need to seek medical treatment or natural thyroid treatment.

An under-active thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is when the gland does not produce enough of the hormone. This situation is fairly common, especially as people age. It is seen more frequently in women than in men. Some of the common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, depression, pale and dry skin, hair loss and weight gain.

Other possible warning signs of a sluggish thyroid may consist of: an increased intolerance to cold temperatures; muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches; memory difficulties; sleep problems; decreased libido; and abnormal menstrual cycles. Symptoms may present alone or in combination and in varying degrees of severity.

Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is caused when the thyroid produces too much hormone. A few of the symptoms of an over-active gland can be heart palpitations, increased sweating, nervousness and insomnia. It can also cause fatigue and muscle weakness among other things.

A thyroid disorder is usually detected with a blood test. Occasionally the disease can be more difficult to diagnose. Depending on the type of dysfunction present, the doctor and patient can then decide on a treatment plan to treat it.

For hypothyroidism, doctors frequently prescribe the synthetic replacement therapy levothyroxine. Blood tests for hormone levels are monitored regularly and it can become necessary to change dosages or even medications. A patient who is prescribed this pill is usually expected to continue taking it indefinitely. There is not actual "cure" for the condition, but it can be managed.

There are also alternative remedies available that may be appropriate for managing a low functioning thyroid gland. Holistic doctors sometimes prescribe a special diet, exercise, stress reduction and natural supplements for patients suffering from hypothyroidism. Some symptomatic people, who have not been diagnosed, may also choose to self-treat with natural methods.

The first step to natural treatment of the hormonal imbalance is a healthy diet. This can be an effective way to ease the symptoms. Vitamins and other biological supplements can also play an effective, supportive role to managing an under-active gland.

The thyroid needs iodine to produce its hormones. Kelp and bladderwrack are two of the recommended supplements that can enhance the essential iodine levels. A healthy diet should include iodine-rich things like bananas, yogurt, seafood, and iodized table salt.

L-tyrosine is an amino acid necessary to enhance the thyroid production. This may be taken as a supplement and through diet. Fish, chicken, pumpkin, turkey, lima beans and peanuts are some of the foods containing this building block.

It is not a good idea to leave hypothyroidism untreated. As time goes on, it could very likely lead to other health problems. There are many options available to sufferers of this condition, including natural thyroid treatment. Whatever treatment the victim of this imbalance chooses, the important thing is to feel healthier and more energetic.
