Is making a personal injury claim selfish?

The newspapers are always full of stories about cheats and fraudsters. Something they particularly enjoy writing about is personal injury claims that involve people who have exaggerated or sometimes entirely faked injuries to win compensation. This has contributed to the idea that the people making personal injury claims are selfish spongers, motivated by greed. Is that really the case?

Public opinion of personal injury claims may have worsened further after insurance companies stated that premiums would have to rise to reflect the increasing number of claims being made. However, the rise in premiums has gone beyond what personal injury claims are costing insurance companies and are instead leading to wider profit margins. The implication from insurance companies has also been that lots of people were making unnecessary claims, despite the fact there has never been any evidence to prove this.

If your accident was in the workplace you might wonder if colleagues or your employers will think you are putting your own interests ahead of the company if you make a personal injury claim. Such a sentiment is ridiculous - surely the employer should put the safety of its employees above excess profit and should be willing to compensate employees when they fail to do so. Those that don't aren't worth working for.

The fact is that lots of people just don't have the luxury of deciding not to make a personal injury claim. If your injury puts you out of work and you end up having to pay for things that are a direct consequence of your injury you might struggle to make ends meet.

Of course, there are people who will have suffered an accident in the workplace or on the road and think that they will be able to get rich quick. The greedy ones will be disappointed however, as making a personal injury claim is about making sure someone is appropriately compensated for the costs incurred by an accident, not about funding your round the world holiday.
