Many people today are both trying to lose weight and make healthier choices in what they eat. At one time, you can accomplish both when you start eating more foods that are organic. Choosing organic foods in order to stay healthy and at the same time lose weight is a really smart thing to do, but there is obviously more to it than that.

Some people assume that additives such as pesticides, genetically modified foods and growth hormones are safe simply because they're legal. Yet in many cases, there hasn't been much research to determine whether such foods are harmful or not.

A lot of people use sweeteners to help them lose weight, not even realizing these foods, which include saccharine, high fructose corn syrup, and aspartame, are not only harmful to their health, but actually causes them to gain more weight. Many people drink diet soda because it has low-calories and no sugar, but many are now getting a lot of various health problems. There are many foods that are all natural and organic, that are low in calories, and these are the ones you should sensibly look at. Organic foods are really good for you, but the portions you eat still need to be smaller. The type of food you eat is important, but so is the amount you eat, so when you want to lose weight, you need to be concerned about both. If you will use smaller plates and bowls, research has shown you won't eat as much. When you are not hungry, you should not eat, nor should you eat out of habit, so watch out when you are snacking. Most people who are overweight, eat too big of portions, and they continue to eat long after they should have stopped. Do this and throughout the day you will not eat too many calories.

Not only should you be buying foods that are organic, but if they are also locally grown, that would be best for the environment. Whether the food is organic or not, if it takes a long distance to transport the food, the amount of energy required is a lot. When you buy food that is from the local area, quite often it doesn't have pesticides, therefore it is healthier, even when it is not naturally grown.

It is becoming known more all the time that processed foods and pesticides are bad for you, and they will cause weight gain if they are a large part of your diet. People who are eating foods with certain chemicals are having their hormones thrown out of balance, most particularly their levels of estrogen. One of the reasons there are so many overweight people is because of hormone problems, most notably high levels of estrogen, in both men and women. If chemicals sprayed on your food causes an increase in estrogen, then it would be wise to eat foods that didn't have any of the chemicals sprayed on them. Eating foods sprayed with pesticides have many more dangers than only this one. You should always be thinking of the nutritional content of the foods you are eating, especially if you are trying to lose weight. When you buy organic foods, you are getting foods that haven't been sprayed with pesticides or contain artificial ingredients, as well as being more nutritious and less processed. These tips are helpful when shopping or going out to eat, as long as you want to eat healthy.
