Over the years, I have observed a lot of pink ribbons supporting breast cancer awareness and I think it's a great cause, but I haven't seen a blue prostate cancer ribbon. In fact, I didn't even know that they existed until I spotted my neighbor, Frank, wearing one when he was pushing his garbage can to the curb the other day, and I asked him what a blue ribbon could possibly mean.

He told me that it was a ribbon for prostate cancer awareness and he was wearing it in support of his father who had been diagnosed with the disease a few months ago and was now receiving treatments for it. Well, I felt like a total moron for not been more aware of something that millions of men struggle with and I asked him where I could get a ribbon for myself in order to show my support for awareness.

He said he had another one of this prostate cancer ribbon in the house, so he generously gave me the one he was wearing so that I would be able to wear it proudly. And I did precisely that, and at work, I noticed that the ribbon was a fantastic conversation starter, and it led to some wonderful conversations about prostate cancer and how it affected those we care about.

We were all deeply affected by this conversation and decided that we should do more in order to help those who suffer from this and other afflictions as well as promote awareness. Additionally, one of my co-workers had the brilliant idea to do something as an office during the month of September which happens to be prostate cancer awareness month.

The management of the company was very supportive about the idea, and they arranged to have a prostate cancer awareness meeting at the beginning of September and have a doctor or a cancer survivor come and speak to us about the disease and answer all of our questions. I also had a lot of people ask me if they could get a ribbon to wear along with me, and I, of course agreed, but first I had to go and ask my neighbor where he had gotten his. He grinned as I told him about my experience at work and told me that he was glad that people out there were learning about something so important.
