How To Facilitate A Bail Bond

Step one to understanding this concept is to know how a bail actually works. If an arrest leads someone to be placed in jail after being accused of a crime, they may be offered the option of posting bail in order to be released until their court date. The bail is money given to the court that provides sort of an insurance policy that you will show up at your court date. Once you have shown up in court as agreed upon, the bail money is returned since you have fulfilled your obligation. Since the court is very interested in having you actually show up to your court date, bonds are usually set quite high, which is why most people require the use of a bail bond.

Instead of presenting the court with a large some of money to place bail, you can instead present a bail bond. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the people who facilitate these bail bond services are known as bail bondsmen. Instead of paying the full amount to the court, you instead pay 10% of the bail amount to them and then they pay the full bail amount to the court. After you show up to court, they get the money they posted for bail paid back to them, and they also keep the 10% you paid initially as their fee.

Getting the bail money back is dependent on you showing up to court though, so they will require more than just the 10% fee. Generally, collateral of some sort will be required so they can be sure that they can be assured they will get their money even if you do not show up to court. Usually people put up a mortgage as their collateral, either their own or a family members, since that is their only asset large enough to cover the entire bond.

The need for a bail bond is not an ideal situation to be in, but it should at least be comforting to know that you have options. They let you spend your time going about your normal life until your court date instead of having to sit in jail, and give a guarantee to the court that you will show up when you are supposed to. Now you should be able to facilitate the process of a bail bond should you or a friend ever need one.

Hopefully, you have never been in a position in which you have needed to know what a bail bond is. In the event that you do need it one day though, it is a good idea to know how to go about getting one so you do not end up having to sit in jail.
