Instead of paying the full amount to the court, you instead pay 10% of the bail amount to them and then they pay the full bail amount to the court. After you show up to court, they get the money they posted for bail paid back to them, and they also keep the 10% you paid initially as their fee.
Getting the bail money back is dependent on you showing up to court though, so they will require more than just the 10% fee. Generally, collateral of some sort will be required so they can be sure that they can be assured they will get their money even if you do not show up to court. Usually people put up a mortgage as their collateral, either their own or a family members, since that is their only asset large enough to cover the entire bond.
The need for a bail bond is not an ideal situation to be in, but it should at least be comforting to know that you have options. They let you spend your time going about your normal life until your court date instead of having to sit in jail, and give a guarantee to the court that you will show up when you are supposed to.
