There are two classes of legal conjugal partnership approved in the Land of Lincoln; namely marriages and the newly passed civil unions. The latter became a legal form of spousal partnership on June 1, 2011. That is why indexes will not be available from the Vital Records Division until June 1, 2012. At any rate, the Illinois Public Health Division can only provide indexes of both marital events and dissolutions. If you need certified document copies of Illinois Marriage Records or actual dissolution decrees, you can submit an application to the circuit court clerk in the county where the dissolution of nuptial or matrimony occurred.

It is the Public Health Department's role to create and maintain statewide records on births, deaths, marriages, civil unions and terminations of nuptials or unions. Filed data on deaths and births that are preserved by the Department can date back to 1916. Documents on state matrimonies available at the government office are those that have occurred from 1962 up to the present index date available. You can only order for verification papers and not actual certificates from this agency. If you need the actual copies of marriage certificates, you have to request that from the court registrar's office in the county or city where it occurred.

For a $5 cost, you can contact the Vital Records section of the Department of Public Health, and verify whether or not a certain nuptial has in fact taken place in Illinois territory (covers data from 1962-current list on hand). You may order for such document by mail, fax, or walk-in services. Otherwise, you may see the local courthouses in which the wedded spouses took their nuptial license. There is a list of circuit court clerks per county on the government site in case you do not have information on the addresses or telephone numbers of the court offices.

Take note of the following details when ordering verifications for marriages: information regarding the document being sought (e.g. name of each spouse, their birth dates, the city/county and date the event occurred), valid credit card numbers, a day-time phone number, mailing address, and a clear photocopy of a valid photo identification.
