If you have cold sores, there are steps you can take to help stop them spreading to other parts of your body and to other people. Once you have cold sores treating them is possible, but they will periodically re-occur, so it is best to avoid getting them in the first place if you can.

Do not touch the sores, but if you do, make sure you wash both hands thoroughly with water and soap. If you wear contacts, it is particularly important to wash both hands before you touch them.

Do not kiss someone, or have oral sex, until your cold sores have completely healed. Do not share any objects such as a lipstick or lip-gloss, a razor, face towel or cutlery that may have touched your cold sores.

In addition to avoiding certain forms of physical contact with other people there are a few steps you can take to help keep yourself from getting cold sores. Use sunscreen for your lips to stop overexposure to sunlight. Cold sores appear on thin, skin and a hold in areas of skin that have been weakened, for example by sunburn. Consume a proper diet to boost your body's immune system.

Stress and feeling run down can trigger recurrent episodes of cold sores. Taking measures to stop yourself feeling that way can also lessen your potential for having an outbreak.

In case you are unlucky, enough to have fever blisters treat them as early as you can. The earlier you treat them the better. There are numerous non-prescription skin medications available that happen to be quite effective. Prior to when a cold sore appears, you may often feel a tingling. That is the time for you to apply the cream. Many people swear by employing an ice cube wrapped within a flannel to the spot as a means of stopping cold sores from forming into blisters. You can attempt this, but take care not to leave the cube on too long and cause ice burn. You should never do this to cold sores, which are weeping.

Should you get re-occurring cold sores and frequently suffer from them for weeks consult your doctor. People who have a strong immune system do not suffer from ongoing cold sores. Having them constantly is a sign that your body's immune system is compromised, and that means you should see a doctor.
