ADD, also known as ADHD or attention deficit disorder, is a type of developmental disorder. It can afflict both children and adults, and signs that there is a disorder may be present before age seven. There are several ADD symptoms in children to look for.

The signs and symptoms associated with this disorder can be hard to distinguish from regular behavior of kids. If a child shows consistent or numerous of these symptoms, it may be likely that they are suffering from the disorder. However, only trained doctors can make the final decision.

There are many myths related to ADD, especially in kids. A commonly held myth is that all kids with the disorder are hyperactive. This is not always the case. Kids with ADD may be inattentive and appear unmotivated or spaced.

Another myth is that these kids are incapable of paying attention. It is true that these individuals may struggle to concentrate, but this is usually not the case with activities that they like doing. When they find tasks to be repetitive or boring, they may have problems focusing.

A commonly held belief is that kids grow out of this problem. The truth is, this disorder carries into adulthood although it can be managed and minimized greatly through various treatments. Another myth is that medication is the only treatment solution. Medications may be prescribed, but there are other methods available and treatment should be applied to each individual situation. Other treatment options: change in diet, education, exercise, support system at home and school, and behavior therapy.

Inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity are the three characteristics associated with ADD. It is important to note that symptoms will vary by child. Signs of inattention include, but are not limited to: trouble remembering and following instructions, making careless mistakes, problems focusing, unable to keep organized, plan ahead or finish tasks, bored easily, loses or misplaces items on a regular basis, makes careless mistakes, pays no attention to detail. Hyperactive symptoms often include fidgeting, quick temper, excessively talking, always moving around. Impulsivity involves impatience, interrupting people, inability to regulate emotions, guessing instead of problem solving, acting before thinking.

Even a child that displays one or more of the three characteristics is not necessarily a sufferer of ADD. In fact, these ADD symptoms in children are similar to those found in individuals with stress, medical problems or psychological disorders. To be sure that your child has the disorder and receives adequate treatment, seek professional advice and diagnosis. Kids with ADD have positive characteristics as well, such as enthusiasm, energy, drive, creativity and flexibility.
