The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors is in existence to protect the general public. Some may think their purpose is only to discipline, but that is not true. They protect the life, health, and property of homeowners and others. The have education, licenses, and regulations for business practice for electricians so as to fully protect others.

NC General Statutes have very definite regulations about licensing and other aspects of doing business as a licensed electrician. When doing any construction or wiring chores, the services of a licensed person must be obtained. These people have some very strict requirements in reference to education and assessment before they are able to earn their license and are able to advertise themselves as such.

When obtaining a professional to work for you, it is important to check out some things. One thing is to be sure of what it is you need done. You may not know how it will be done, but you should know exactly what you expect. If you have lights going on and off or appliances tripping breakers, you know you want that to stop. If you are getting new construction done, you know what you want installed.

Once you have determined what you need, get in contact with some professionals to get estimates. These can be someone you found online or in the yellow pages, or someone a friend recommended to you. You can sometimes get recommendations from suppliers where the contractors buy their supplies. They may not specify any one person, but can give you a list of recommended contractors.

Make a comparison of the estimates you are able to get. You might want to interview them in person as well. Know exactly what is included in the quote so you can make good comparisons. Check that they have the proper licenses and certifications. If they give references, check those out. Try to get references from both customers and any businesses they may have used. A red flag means you need to look more closely and maybe choose another person on your list.

Once you have checked everything out, make sure everything is in writing. Verbal agreements, even between friends, often spell disaster, and will never stand up in court if something goes wrong. The potential for serious consequences is huge with this type of work. You want to make sure you are adequately covered in the event of something going wrong. Only by a written agreement can you be sure of this.

In any construction or repair work such as this, there will be city ordinances to consider, and permits needed. There will also be an inspection at the end. Clarify who will arrange for all these, and what happens if inspection doesn't pass. Be sure the professional is going to correct what is wrong to make sure inspection can be passed. Have it all in writing so there is no misunderstanding.

The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors is designed to protect you, the public. There are specified education requirements and certain business practices that must be followed. They are there to be sure you don't get ripped off.
