EPA training courses are now so much in vogue that even ordinary citizens are joining the public officials and green sector workers who normally enroll. The extraordinary interest can be attributed in part to the ease of taking online classes at various government academies or with an authorized learning partner. Regardless of who is studying where, the goal will always be to gain a better understanding of the Environmental Protection Agency's regulations and programs.

Every major division within the agency has its own separate learning institution. There are divisions and institutes for the agency's core activities related to water, air and enforcement. Other sectors within the EPA that can be considered important include environmental modeling, hazardous and solid waste, and pesticides.

Air and the teaching of technical issues related to air pollution are handled by the APTI air pollution institute. Water takes up a significant part of the agency's resources. The learning aspects are handled by the WA and DWA, which are the watershed and drinking water academies respectively. In addition, water also has specific regulation-related learning, such as CWA courses for the Clean Water Act.

Pesticide programs are also separated into sub-divisions. One section deals with pesticide applicator learning and certification. The second part offers lessons on worker safety, and is more hands-on. The certificate course will be rather more theoretical and explore the environmental impacts and chemical composition of pesticides.

NETI or National Enforcement Training Institute takes care of providing lessons in enforcement. Obviously, these classes are mostly attended by public officials with environmental regulation duties at the local, state and federal levels. It will also be useful for executives from the private industry charged with overseeing EPA compliance and liaison with other regulatory bodies.

Hazardous waste education for both emergency managers and the general public is provided by FEMA's Emergency Management Institute. The focus is on getting acquainted with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Plan (NRP). EPA Training Courses dealing with the best practices and technical aspects of environmental modeling are provided by the Council for Regulatory Environmental Modeling (CREM).
