Often children have an intimidating start to their math learning and develop a negative attitude towards the subject. But things need not be this way. You can easily motivate your child and help them to become confident in the subject now and into the future. Simple steps that you can help them with such as playing numeracy games for kids with them can build a solid number sense that will set them up for success in math.

It is very important to develop a strong foundation in the basics of math in order to cement future success in the subject. Taking the time to really practice the early basic skills is well worthwhile. The rest of what your child will learn in math will be based upon the basic four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

You can find many websites out there that will support your child's learning in math and there are many games that you can play with concrete materials at home. Using both the computer and hands on materials at home is very motivating for children and helps them to understand math concepts. It is important to ensure that you are choosing age appropriate content though.

It is not necessary to push your child to be able to solve algebraic equations or find square roots as early as possible. This does not necessarily mean that they are good at math. It is important that you develop in your child a number sense, which is an understanding of how numbers work and the patterns and sequences you can find in numbers.

In contrast, by pushing your child, they may learn to do math mechanically, but do not really understand what they are doing - that is like being able to speak another language, but not being able to comprehend what you are saying. It is far better to go slowly and allow your child to reinforce the basic skills and develop a very strong foundation across the four operations.

This should focus on learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division very solidly. Young children should start by learning their number bonds to 10, 20, 100 etcetera. It is necessary to reinforce the connection between the four operations - that subtraction and addition are opposites and multiplication and division are opposites.

It is a great idea to really work hard on developing fast and accurate mental maths skills in your children. By working with them for just a few minutes each day on mental maths, they will become very mentally agile and able to grasp new math and logic concepts quickly.

Once addition and subtraction skills are strong, then you can begin to work on the multiplication times table facts. You should introduce the idea of multiplication as simply a repeated addition. There are many sites out there for developing the multiplication skills. Work on these until your child knows them be heart - instantly and without hesitation.

There are so many fun, effective and educational numeracy games for kids, that you will easily find what you are looking for. Taking things slowly and ensuring that your child has an expansive and flexible understanding of the four operations is essential. Working together for just minutes each day will help their academic skills immensely and it is also quality time spent together as well. When kids really begin to understand the patterns that underscore the four operations they become very motivated and begin to enjoy their learning.
